PERSONALITY:
A Penny for Your Thoughts
Aya keeps to herself almost all the time. She is a quiet girl, preferring to stay alone and living her life without friends. To her, living a life of solitude didn’t seem to be such a bad thing. Over the course of her adolescent years, she had begun to understand that the best way for her to keep on living was if she associated with nobody. She is hostile with everyone and very few (only two people to this day) have managed to penetrate past the barrier that she erupted between her and the rest of the world; one being her dearest older brother, Hiro and another was her deceased friend, Saki. After losing her parents and then seeing her best friend die in front of her, she didn’t want to become close to anybody, for fear that she’d lose anyone else. And so, Aya tightened the bond she shared with Hiro, thinking that if she as much as loosened the bond, he’d leave her there, alone in the miserable world.
Because she was so quiet, nobody really knew what she was thinking half the time. Many have tried without any success. She rejected all forms of communication other than the very basic greetings that people shared with other people. She disliked people trying and if anyone ever did, she would simply ignore them and never speak to them again. Aya isn’t a cold person so much as withdrawn. If someone managed to build a close enough relationship with her, or someone deserved her genuine care, she would go all out and care for that person. She would protect them with everything, including her life. That was the extent of loyalty she showed for people, if given the chance.
Passion Outweighs Coldness
She is passionate at what she does. Ever since she moved to away from her hometown and had immigrated to the unfamiliar country of America, she had always wanted to become a teacher. In Forks High School she had found that her wish could be granted. Aya treats her students and treats her colleagues very differently. In front of her students, she will always smile, sometimes a little more than necessary. Perhaps she was still getting used to being visibly happy in front of people. She understood that being a teacher required that she be a little bit more amiable and sociable at least with her students so she makes such exceptions. Even though she needs to make an exception, she is perfectly fine with doing so. It shows what extents she's willing to change herself in order to be a good teacher.
Sensitive Doesn't Mean Fragile
Aya can be a very sensitive and emotional person. When she shows her emotions to people, she will do so without any hesitation. Anyone that knew her would know that she was an easily upset person, that if anyone around her was sad, she would be affected negatively too. This could be due to her past, when she had witnessed the death of her mother after her father had died in a car accident. Having lost both her parents and her best friend has made her slightly emotional and paranoid. However, she is not the type to show this vulnerability easily. She hides very well on the surface. Perhaps this is the way she had decided would be best for her in order to protect herself. In her mind, the idea of sensitivity was not a form of fragility but a form of strength.
HISTORY:
Miyagi Aya, or Suzuki Aya, was born on November 6 1982 in Sendai-shi, the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. [仙台市, 宮城県.日本国]. She was like almost every other girl, lavished at birth by two loving parents and cared for by her older brother, Hiro. Life was supposedly so peaceful and happy. And so it was, for awhile. Her father was a surgeon in one of the leading hospitals in the city while her mother was a normal housewife. The financial situation of the family was very stable and everything seemed to be alright. Until...
The girl had just finished high school and had chosen to not follow her father's footsteps and become a surgeon. It was technically impossible for her given her health situation. She had Mitral Valve Prolapse as well as Cardiac Arrhythmia, two heart conditions) that had killed any desire of wanting to be a doctor. However, over the years of schooling, she had managed to find a passion in teaching and had decided to become a teacher, hoping to educate the next generation. Aya had high hopes and they were further developed as she was accepted into MUE, Miyagi University of Education (宮城教育大学), one of the leading Universities in the area. All seemed to be just fine as she worked hard towards her goal. But this was all shattered the year she had graduated from the program.
That was the year when she found out that her mother had been having an affair with another man...
At first Aya had been in denial. It couldn't be happening because she always thought that her parents were so loving...they were perhaps the most loving couple that she had ever known. She remembered being envious of how happy the two of them had become and how solid their relationship was. But it had all been just a lie, a very beautiful one but still a lie. She couldn't believe that her mother would betray her father in such a way. It was only until her mother decided to divorce her father that it hit her just how realistic what had been happening was. She tried to keep calm and thought perhaps it was all just a misunderstanding. But that was not to be the case either. There was no time for that because a week after her mother had asked for a divorce, her father had died in a car accident. It all came crashing down on the poor girl. All she knew as that her father had been drinking and driving one night and had hit another car at such a speed which had killed the man.
Devastated, she still forced herself to cope with the loss of her beloved father. The two of them had been so close, closer than most father-daughter relationships. She did not blame anyone for his death, rather choosing to take it all silently. But that wasn't all the interruption she received from her otherwise peaceful life. A few weeks after the passing of her father, her mother committed suicide. In the suicide note addressed to both Aya and Hiro, she told them of how much guilt she felt for their father's death and that every time she saw them she was reminded of this guilt. Unable to face her own children at last, she had chosen the selfish way of dealing with the situation, which was ultimately...death.
It was only a blessing that both Aya and Hiro had finished their schooling when all of this happened. She felt that she was no longer able to stay in Sendai-shi to fulfill her lifelong goal of teaching. She knew that anywhere around the world she would be able to...just not there. And so, after consulting with Hiro, she decided to venture off on her own, to the other side of the globe; to America. Her English was not very good, having lived in Japan most of her life and so she realized that she couldn't afford to live in any of the major cities. In the years which followed her immigration, she had tried her very best and had finally mastered much more than the basic English she had been taught upon first arriving. She knew that only with time may her dream of becoming a teacher come true.
And so it did...
In a little place called Forks in Washington, which she had been told of positions opening for teachers at the local high school. And so, she ventured there with her best friend and long-time classmate, Ayase Tatsuki. Hiro had taken a whole different turn in his life and had wanted to live on his own. Accepting that as their fate, she left for the city and for a couple of years, she and Tatsuki were very close. That all changed when Tatsuki died of sudden illness. Aya realized that life was so fragile and yet so strong at the same time. She vowed that with the remaining years of her life, she will do everything in power to realize her dreams, one step at a time. She will not leave this world with any regrets...

"Suzuki-sensei!"
Aya froze at the voice who called her. Suzuki-sensei...how long she had gone without somebody calling her by the surname Suzuki and also with the Japanese honorific 'sensei'. Her heart skipped a beat as she somewhat remembered the voice which had called her by the name. However, she was uncertain and thus it took her a moment before she knew how to respond. The young teacher slowly turned her body around, her eyes setting on the other person. And that was when her eyes widened. Indeed...indeed it was him! Short black hair, big brown eyes, fair skin and that..that dazzling smile...Her heart momentarily stopped beating, but only for a fraction of a second as her mind processed who it was that was standing not two feet away from her.
"Matsumoto Daichi..."came her whisper. She let out a small smile, close to a sneer as she whispered his name. Daichi, the young man who she had met at University in Miyagi had come to Forks?! The young woman advanced towards him, her heart beating even faster as she closed in the distance. As she got within conversational distance, she widened her smile just a fraction and continued "Ogenki desu ka?" (Trans: How are you?) It wasn't any normal day that she could use Japanese to speak to someone. Ever since she had immigrated to America, she had found difficulty finding somebody who spoke the language. Everyone around her spoke English and so, in a sense, Daichi was like her savior. But in a lot of ways...he wasn't. His presence reminded her of the past she had so wanted to forget; a past she had so wanted to leave behind forever. Now seeing the young man before her, she couldn't help but cast her glance to the ground, hoping that he wouldn't take offence.
"Genki desu, Aya-chan wa?" (Trans: I'm fine, yourself, Aya?)
His voice was just as gentle and loving as it used to be. When she was in University, she had thought that maybe..just maybe they'd have a future together. Aya had had a crush on him but because she was shy and couldn't take the first step she had let it pass. It was one of her regrets, not having told him her feelings. Now that she was reunited with him once more, she knew she couldn't say it. Not only had they not seen each other for close to five years, but everything had changed. Suzuki Aya is now Miyagi Aya. The once cheerful girl had now become silent in a foreign land with strangers at every corner. She nodded her head at his question. For awhile there was an awkward silence and she was saved from speaking when the sound of the bell notifying the beginning of class sounded up above. She breathed a small sigh of relief as she quickly looked up at Daichi. "Daichi-san, I'll catch up with you later, ne? I'll give you my phone number and we will speak again soon, I have class now." She noticed his curt nod and quickly wrote down her number on a small piece of paper and handed it to him. Although she really didn't want to, she couldn't and wouldn't be hostile towards Daichi...anybody BUT him.
Could it be fate that brought them together once more, five years after their initial encounter? Could it be that they were destined to be together? This Aya didn't know. But for now, she didn't want to think and so, with a courteous bow, she headed back down the hallway, heading for her classroom.
